Ban gifts from vendors/lobbyists to SMMUSD officials
LULevelheaded UnionSanta MonicaProposed
I learned recently that Carey Upton, the COO of SMMUSD, has had a number of meals paid for by companies that seem like potential bidders on SMMUSD contracts. Including a $200 dinner paid for by "Astroturf"! (See the attached disclosure.) I've also noticed that our natural grass playing fields are being replaced by toxic artificial turf. Why does the SMMUSD Board allow its staff to receive gifts like this? The SMMUSD needs to ban any gifts from people or companies with business before the District.

This seems pretty straightforward to me. Vendors should have to win contracts on the merits, on the basis of what is best for students.
