Install four-way stops on Alta Avenue, from Ocean to 26th
Andrew A.Santa MonicaProposed
Alta Avenue is an alternative to Montana Avenue for parents pushing strollers, children riding bikes, joggers, and pedestrians of all ages. It's the mirror image of Idaho Avenue in many ways, where a deadly 2023 car crash led to the installation of four-way stops along the same span. Worse, Alta and its cross-streets do not intersect at right angles in some places, causing visibility issues for cars and pedestrians that are exacerbated by a lack of "daylighting" (space between the intersection and street parking). And, because most of the existing stop signs on Alta are installed only for cars traveling along Alta, the north/south traffic on the numbered streets have no stop signs or other traffic calming for the 1/4 mile stretch from Montana to Marguerita, encouraging drivers to achieve dangerous speeds just as they are passing through the Alta intersections. We should build on the success of the four-way stops on Idaho, which neighbors report has led to more walkable streets, less through-traffic, and a safer, quieter environment, by implementing the same approach on Alta.
